Nutrition therapy is much more than simple nutrition education. It is much more than handing clients a list of food "do's and don'ts" or providing a basic one-size-fits-all 1500 calorie diet. Nutrition therapy looks at the underlying issues around eating. It motivates clients to make and sustain changes in ways that are deep and lasting.

As a nutrition therapist, I help my clients explore new ways of thinking about food. I encourage them to try new behaviors at a comfortable pace, help them learn to respond to external and internal stimuli in healthful ways, and guide them to take responsibility for their own health and well-being. I teach my clients to listen to their bodies so they can discover for themselves what healthy eating and exercise feels like.  My nutrition therapy is long-term and open-ended in nature, with the client and I creating a relationship built on openness, respect and trust.

Choosing to work with a Registered Dietitian ensures you that you are using the services of a nutrition professional, trained in a scientific discipline and registered by the American Dietetics Association, the nationally recognized dietetics organization.

Anyone can provide nutrition services and label themselves a "nutritionist," whether they have formal training or not.  Registered Dietitians, designated with the initials RD after their names,  have completed both academic and internship programs as required by the Commission on Dietetic Registration, the credentialing agency for the American Dietetics Association.

The minimum educational requirements for a Registered Dietitian are a  bachelor's degree granted by a U.S. regionally accredited college or university, and the successful completion of an approved internship program.  In addition, Registered Dietitians must demonstrate their knowledge of food and nutrition by successfully passing a national credentialing examination.  In order to maintain this credential, Registered Dietitians must pursue continuing professional development throughout their careers.

Nutrition plays an important role in overall health. Current research shows that a healthy diet can lower the risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some forms of cancer. In addition, eating a variety of nutritious foods enhances energy levels and adds pleasure to life.

Good health is attained through healthy habits, including appropriate food choices, eating style, regular exercise, and emotional awareness. These life skills are developed through a process of education and gradual behavior change.

Anyone who has struggled with weight loss knows how frustrating it can be. There are a myriad of weight loss books, programs, supplements and web sites available, each one claiming to have the magic secret to losing weight. There are high protein low carbohydrate (carb) diets, low fat high-carb diets, food combining diets, juice fasts…the list goes on and on. Many of these diets can result in short-term weight loss, but research shows that almost all dieters eventually gain the weight back, and sometimes put on even more weight!

Chronic dieting can not only be physically unhealthy, it can also lead to emotional distress and the development of an eating disorder.  The fact is that there are many different body types.  Most people will never achieve the "ideal" body as depicted by the media and our culture.  But, it is possible for many people to be both large and healthy.

In my practice, I use a non-diet approach to help my clients achieve a weight that is both healthy and possible to maintain on a long-term basis.  Instead of watching the numbers on the scale, we explore how the client feels physically and emotionally as changes are made in food choices and physical activity.  We also integrate concepts of body image and acceptance into the process.  In this way, clients not only make healthy lifestyle changes, but they learn to respect and appreciate their bodies.  In addition, clients learn how to respond appropriately to their physical needs and personal preferences.
